There are many reasons for the above error.
Make sure you are using username@yourdomain.com and not username yourdomain.com
Try removing the account in your mail client and re-adding.
If you have an anti-virus program, you may need to adjust its settings to scan on arrival and send only, to avoid interruptability.
How often are you checking email? You may need to extend the period between checks.
